The word "vintage" appeared in our everyday life
relatively recently. In fact, the French winemakers were the first to use this
term to denote the high quality of long-aging wine. Like a good drink, the
taste of which only improves over time, old things that are at their peak
decades ago are becoming more and more valuable every year.
Vintage is a direction (mainly related to clothing and
interior) that cultivates the use of details and ideas that are the trend of
their era. If we are talking about interior items, then these things are not
necessarily genuine, once used. In most cases, we are talking about new
products that only imitate the fashion of past years.
Unlike the “retro” style, which is characterized by any
antique objects, these are the most significant, most memorable things that
have again become relevant.
There is also an opinion according to which, items made
after the 50s of the 20th century belong to retro, and everything that was
released before 1950 can be considered vintage.
Vintage style in interior design is chosen by true admirers
of antiquity, who value comfort, elegance and originality. In Europe, among
designers, it has become a good tradition to visit numerous sales of antiques
in order to purchase furniture, dishes, and other interior elements. Provided
that such purchases are correctly applied, you can easily give your home an
elegant, but at the same time simple and homely look.
The characteristic features of vintage style in the interior
The following techniques are inherent in this direction:
the use of shabby or artificially aged furniture,
the use of elements with a print of the past as a decor,
lack of plastic, synthetics and other artificial materials,
deliberate negligence: family photographs in frames placed
on a chest of drawers in a chaotic manner, a checkered blanket thrown on the
back of a chair, an unread book lying in open form on a windowsill.

Vintage Style Colors and Shades
The color scheme is concise and restrained. A single color
is used as a background, and harmonious shades are already selected for it.
Preference is given to gentle pastel tones: light blue, lilac, muted green,
pale pink, gray. You can use some shades of brown, but in minimal quantities,
since sharp contrasts in this area are not welcome.
Furniture
In the interior, it is desirable to use furniture from the
late 19th - early 20th century. Although you can pay attention to older things.
The main thing is that the items were made of natural materials, mainly wood.

You can add the randomness necessary for this style by
combining furniture from an antique shop and a new, artificially aged.
Massive dining table, sideboard, huge dressing table in a
fancy frame, sideboard, chairs with peeling paint will perfectly fit into the
vintage interior.
Decor
Accessories should perfectly complement the atmosphere of
the past. Tea sets and vases with floral patterns, beautiful old dolls and
figurines , books in shabby binders - this is exactly what you need. A
gramophone on the chest of drawers, a mirror in an old carved frame and a
grandmother's chest will add the necessary surroundings.

Due attention must be paid to textiles. When choosing
furniture upholstery, tablecloths, curtains, pillows , napkins, you should give
preference to delicate shades: ash, pink, beige, lilac, white. Floral ornaments
prevail in the fabric decor: curly vines, bouquets of roses or lilies, etc.
Only natural fabrics are used: cotton, linen, silk.
Interior decoration in a vintage style is not one day's
business. It takes time to find exactly “your” things. But such a nuance should
not become an obstacle. Properly selected interior items will create a special,
unique atmosphere that cannot be ruined by a carelessly thrown blanket or
scratches on the dining table.
